Systematics

This strongly-supported clade contains only two species, namely the annual C. ramosissima and the
perennial C. hawkinsiana, recently included in the newly-described section Decumbens (Cano-Maqueda & Talavera 2011). Based on ITS sequence data, Cano-Maqueda and Talavera (2011) inferred a moderately-supported “Decumbens” clade showing sister relationships between the respective species pairs C. decumbens–C. dieckii (not included in the present study, both species treated as synonyms by Lammers [2007]) and C. ramosissima–C. hawkinsiana. Morphologically, the four species share a similar general habit along with a glabrous style surmounted by three erect stigmas, an unusual character for Campanula (Cano-Maqueda & Talavera 2011). Caryologically, the group remains rather variable with respective somatic chromosome numbers of 2 n = 20 (C. ramosissima), 22 (C. hawkinsiana), 28 (C. dieckii), and 32 (C. decumbens) (Cano-Maqueda & Talavera 2011, Contandriopolous 1964, Podlech & Damboldt, 1964). If confirmed by further molecular data, this clade would exemplify a new case of a lineage with current W-E disjunct distribution, with a C. decumbens–C. dieckii clade of annuals, endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, and a C. ramosissima–C. hawkinsiana clade occurring in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
